Local governments receive community revitalization grants

Nine Southern Illinois communities will be receiving grant funding to support affordable housing and community revitalization efforts, which State Senator Dale Fowler (R-Harrisburg) says is exciting and encouraging news for the region.

This week, the Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA) Board approved almost 1 million in funding to be distributed among nine communities in Southern Illinois through their Strong Communities Program. The new initiative through IHDA was created in 2020 to provide granting funding for the acquisition, maintenance, rehabilitation and demolition of abandoned residential properties.

“I’m excited to see several communities in Southern Illinois receive funding support to help revitalize abandoned, unused and often costly properties in our local neighborhoods,” said Sen. Fowler. “These grants are an investment in Southern Illinois which will help improve our communities, alleviate cost burdens and pave the way for future affordable housing opportunities.”

The following communities will receiving funding to support initiatives aimed toward increasing property values, stimulating job creation, reducing criminal activities, boosting tax revenue and encouraging future community investment:

·        Brookport-$175,000

·        Cairo-$175,000

·        Harrisburg-$100,000

·        Mound City-$74,000
