Senator Fowler Hosts Student Advisory Council for Local Students

State Senator Dale Fowler (R-Harrisburg) welcomed students from across the 59th Senate District to the Illinois State Capitol as part of his Student Advisory Council (SAC) program. This hands-on experience provided students with an in-depth look at government, public service, and the legislative process.

Students had the opportunity to tour the Capitol, visit the Senate chamber, and learn about the inner workings of state government. They also heard from a representative of the Illinois Retail Merchants Association and had the opportunity to meet with Illinois Lt. Governor Julianna Stratton before participating in a mock committee debate.

“Each year, I look forward to welcoming students to the Capitol and giving them a firsthand look at the legislative process,” said Senator Fowler. “These young leaders are the future of our state, and helping them understand how government works encourages them to use their voice and be active participants in the democratic process.”

For many students – many of whom had never been to the Capitol – the event was a memorable and meaningful experience that highlighted the importance of staying informed and engaged in the governance process.

Brooklyn Biggerstaff, a senior at Eldorado High School, said, “Growing up, I’ve always been really interested in politics.” She added, “In a few years, we will be the people asking questions, the people in charge and the people coming up with bills.”

Shelonda Johnson from Cairo Elementary School said, “Kids should care about politics because it has something to do with your future.”

Troy Robinson, a senior at Marion High School, said, “Every single policy that the government passes, whether it be at the state or national level, is going to affect you in some way. “[Participating in the SAC] is a great way to get involved.”

After touring the Capitol and hearing from guest speakers, students participated in a mock committee debate.

Eden Anderson, a senior at Crab Orchard High School, said, “I think that this is a great opportunity for students to get firsthand experience on how this stuff works.”

Senator Fowler says the Student Advisory Council offers a unique opportunity for students to engage directly with the legislative process and gain a deeper understanding of how laws are created.

“These students represent the future of our country and our state,” said Senator Fowler. “It’s so important for them to see that their voice matters and that their involvement in state government can make a real difference.”

Senator Fowler hosts this program annually. It is open to high school students throughout the 59th Senate District. Those interested in participating in future events are encouraged to contact their principal or superintendent for more information.
